Part IV: The Science of Chiropractic Adjustment

Scientific research has shown that chiropractic techniques can be used to treat acute or chronic pain, headaches and neck pain. The American College of Physicians (ACP) developed a guideline explaining the evidence on “noninvasive treatment of low back pain:”

“…clinicians and patients should initially select nonpharmacologic treatment with exercise…acupuncture, mindfulness-based stress reduction…motor control exercise…or spinal manipulation.”

The guideline concludes that, because acute back pain naturally improves over time, “nonpharmacologic treatment” should be considered first.

Another 2013 study commented that,“[Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy] in conjunction with [standard medical care] offers a significant advantage for decreasing pain and improving physical functioning when compared with only standard care, for men and women between 18 and 35 years of age with acute low back pain.”

For neck pain, a study lasting 52 weeks in 2003 treated patients using spinal mobilization, physiotherapy, i.e. exercise, and general practitioner care – including drug use. The results explicitly favored “manual therapy,” or spinal mobilization:

“The manual therapy group showed a faster improvement than the physiotherapy group and the general practitioner care group.”

Better yet, the costs of manual therapy were around one-third the costs of practitioner care and physiotherapy.

Similar comparisons between chiropractic techniques and other methods favor the former. A 2015 study concluded that

“94% of [a group treated with chiropractic techniques] achieved greater than 30% reduction in pain compared with 69% [of people in] medical care.”

The list goes on. Whether it’s a 2001 study correlating spinal manipulation and headache improvement, or a 2012 study with more than half of subjects reporting a significant reduction in pain after chiropractic treatment, research consistently demonstrates that non-invasive techniques are superior at containing pains than drugs and chemicals.

Dr. Ronald Glick, assistant professor of psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, says, “The benefits of chiropractic for acute low back pain have been pretty widely accepted for years now within the medical community.” Every year, more and more in the medical community are accepting the possibilities of chiropractic treatment proven by research and centuries of experience.
