What Happens During a Chiropractic Appointment?
As a doctor of chiropractics, Dr. Doyle analyzes your body for vertebral subluxation, a severe form of spine and nerve stress, and then corrects or removes any spinal nerve stress using various spinal adjustment techniques.
What Causes Subluxations?
Subluxations come from stress. Some subluxations are rooted in early experiences, such as a difficult birth or a childhood fall. Automobile accidents, slips or sports injuries can cause subluxations, as can simply picking up heavy objects improperly or sleeping in an uncomfortable position. Emotional tension or stress can also gradually damage your spine. When you hear someone say “I threw out my back” or “I woke up with this crick in my neck”, they are usually referring to subluxations.
Is It Normal to Have Subluxations?
The Surgeon General reports that although much of the population suffers from subluxations, it is estimated that 87 percent of people with subluxations do not get proper treatment through chiropractic care. Instead they simply live with the pain or health condition or take medications to mask the pain or condition.
Nearly everyone eventually gets spinal nerve stress; as a result, most people are affected by subluxations. This is a hidden epidemic. While it is common for adults to have subluxations, it is not healthy to live without treatment.
Chiropractic care is growing in popularity as doctors and individuals are starting to recognize that it’s just as important to get your spine checked by a chiropractic doctor as it is to get your eyes, teeth and blood pressure checked.
What is the History of Chiropractics?
The first chiropractic patient was treated in 1895. Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic spinal adjustment on his deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard. Lillard’s hearing returned, and Palmer thought he had discovered a cure for deafness. But as patients with digestive troubles, sciatica, menstrual trouble, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, back pain and many other conditions responded to spinal care, Palmer realized that he had discovered something much more far-reaching.
What is a Spinal Adjustment?
Chiropractors perform treatments by working with the bones and nerves of the spinal column and spinal cord respectively. Chiropractors spend years of highly specialized training in order to locate where misplaced spinal vertebrae are impinging the nerves which travel down the spinal cord and out through the spinal column to the muscles, organs and glands of the body. After locating the vertebrae impinging the nerves (subluxations) the chiropractor, using various highly specialized techniques, is able to replace the misplaced vertebrae and thus release pressure on the nerves.
What Conditions Are Treated Through Chiropractics?
All kinds of conditions are treated with chiropractic care, such as colds and ear infections, PMS, spinal or disc problems, arthritis, insomnia, stress, vision problems, headaches, allergies, bedwetting, colic, high blood pressure… a long list indeed!
It is important to realize that the goal of chiropractic treatment is not the treatment of the disease but rather the enhancement of health through the reduction of spinal nerve stress (vertebral subluxation complex).
When you read this long list of conditions, it may seem as if we are portraying chiropractics as a Panacea. The truth is that most textbooks list over 200 diseases (treatable through chiropractics). This is because chiropractic care is not like a drug that is used for only one condition. On the contrary, it is a complete healing art within itself, concerned with the systems of the body such as the nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, eliminatory, reproductive, hormonal, musculoskeletal, etc. It seeks to correct health problems within those systems.
How Does Chiropractic Care Mesh With Other Medical Care?
You can receive chiropractic treatments while you are under other medical care. Getting your spinal nerve stress corrected is always helpful. M.D.s and other healers cannot tell if you are suffering from spinal nerve stress and are not trained in correctional methods, so you will benefit most if you have a chiropractor evaluate your spinal column in addition to whatever medical care you are receiving. Chiropractic care complements homeopathy, naturopathy, osteopathy, chemotherapy and other medical practices.
What Other Health Factors Are Considered When Prescribing Holistic Care?
We always consider the following additional five factors when constructing a health plan:
- Proper nutrition
- Adequate rest
- Moderate exercise
- Positive mental attitude
- Proper nerve supply
